비교 I

1. 비교급과 최상급의 형태

1) 규칙 변화: 형용사 또는 부사에 -er, -est 또는 more, most를 붙인다.
▷ 일반적인 형태 : smart - smarter - smartest
▷ -e로 끝나는 단어 ⇒ -r 또는 -st만 붙임 : nice - nicer - nicest
▷ 자음+y로 끝나는 단어 ⇒ y를 i로 고치고 -er, -est를 붙임 : easy - easier - easiest
▷ 일부의 2음절 단어 또는 3음절 이상인 단어 : 앞에 more나 most를 붙임 : famous - more famous - most famous

2) 불규칙 변화
good / well - better - best
bad / badly - worse - worst
many / much - more - most
little - less - least
late (시간이) 늦은 - later - latest
late (순서가) 나중인 - latter - last

2. 비교급의 쓰임

1) 두 대상을 비교할 때, 쓰는 표현임.
주어 + 동사 + 비교급 than 비교대상 ~ :「~보다 더 ~한 (하게)」

This dictionary is thicker than that one. 
My digital camera is more expensive than his.

2) 비교급의 강조
비교급 앞에 much, still, even, far 등을 써서 비교급을 강조한다.
cf) ‘매우’라는 뜻을 많이 쓰이는 very는 원급과 최상급을 강조할 때 쓴다.

That clothes is still better than this one.
English is much more difficult than I thought.

3) less 원급 than... : ...보다 덜 (원급)한

Mary is less active than Nancy.
(=Nancy is more active than Mary.)

3. 비교급을 이용한 중요 표현

1) the 비교급 ~ the 비교급 : ~할수록 더욱 ~하다
The more I get to know her, the more I trust her.
The hotter the weather becomes, the more soft drinks people drink.

2) 비교급 and 비교급 : 점점 더 ~한
The daytime is getting shorter and shorter.
As time went by, they became more and more tired.
(비교급을 만들 때, more를 붙이는 형용사는 more + more 원급으로 표현)

 

1. 원급을 이용한 비교

1) as 원급 as ... : ...만큼 ~(원급)한[하게]
He runs as fast as me.
Time is as valuable as money.

2) not so[as] 원급 as ... : ... 만큼 (원급)하지 않은
French is not as difficult as English.
=English is more difficult than French.

3) as 원급 as possible : 가능한 ~(원급)한[하게]
He tried to do everything as well as possible.
I walked to school as slowly as possible.

4) 배수사 as 원급 as ... : ...보다 몇 배 (원급)한[하게]
South Korea has twice as many people as North Korea.
His salary is three times as high as mine.

2. 최상급을 이용한 표현

1) the + 최상급, 주어 + 동사 + the 최상급 ~ : 가장 ~한
The tallest building in Korea is in Seoul.
My mother is the shortest of them.

2) 원급, 비교급을 이용한 최상급 표현
   S + V ~ the + 최상급 : S가 가장 (최상급) 하다
= No ~ so[as] 원급 as .... : 어떤 ~도 ...만큼 (원급) 하지 않다.
= No ~ 비교급 than ... : 어떤 ~도 ...보다 더 (비교급) 하지 않다.
= S + V ~ 비교급 + than any other + 단수명사 
  : S는 다른 어떤 (단수명사)보다 더 (비교급)하다.
= S + V ~ 비교급 + than all the (other) + 복수명사
  : S는 다른 모든 (복수명사)보다 더 (비교급)하다.

Bill Gates is the richest man in the world.
= No man in the world is as rich as Bill Gates.
= No man in the world is richer than Bill Gates.
= Bill Gates is richer than any other man in the world.
= Bill Gates is richer than all the other men in the world.

3) at most / at least (기껏해야 / 적어도)
The number of the audience in the stadium was at most 50.
The plane crash killed at least 100 people.
